Unprocessed & Homemade Celebration Cakes!

The next few months are big ones in my family for birthdays ~ 14 to be exact. 14 birthdays is a lot of presents, a lot of parties, and a lot of cakes! (yay!) Growing up we celebrated with the cakes that most mothers would make while both homemade and delicious; they were also riddled with processed sugars, white flours, and artificial dyes. I have nothing against these cakes, they were part of my childhood and I remember them fondly! But upon starting our own journey into natural living ~ we had no place for chemicals and processed foods in our home. So, when I started planning my son’s first birthday party (has it really been almost Two Years??) I looked into ways to create cakes that were made with natural and organic ingredients.

The new trend for toddler’s birthday parties is to have a “Smash Cake”! A “Smash Cake” is a small personal-sized cake that is made especially for the birthday child to “Smash” and destroy to their hearts content. I love the idea! You could always just give the child a piece of the ‘party cake’ but where’s the fun in that? We had scoped out Whole Foods weeks in advance ~ my forever go to choice for healthy eating ~ and not even they had a cake in stock that didn’t contain some kind of processed artificial ingredient. So, when in doubt … make your own! For Declan’s “Smash Cake”, Keith and I made him a whole wheat banana cake sweetened with honey and “iced” with naturally dyed whipped cream ~ a great recipe for such a cake can be found at OurHavenHill. The guests received homemade carrot and chocolate cupcakes and I was thrilled with how they turned out and how fast they went.

The possibilities to make natural cakes for your family and little ones are endless. Carrot Cakes are always a good choice, along with apple cakes and banana cakes; even zucchini cakes are moist and delicious! We usually use the same base for our cakes and then switch up the fruit and vegetables per the Celebrant’s birthday preference. And if you want an awesomely moist and decadent Chocolate Cake option, TheHealthyFoodie has the perfect recipe! So before ordering your next bakery cake, or buying another box of cake mix ~ Give these cakes a try. You will thank yourself for it!
